On 10 Jan 1909 Thomas married[2] Ellen Cottrell there in Comanche, Texas. Between 1910 and 1931 Ellen gave birth[3][4][5] to their nine children. His 1917 WWI draft card[6] shows that Thomas is farming in Comanche. The 1930 census has Thomas raising his family and farming in Martha, Jackson, Oklahoma.

The 1940 census[7] show them living in Comal, Texas and his father is staying with them. His father Patrick died in 1941. Thomas Henry Johnston passed away[8] on 07 Feb 1946 in Stephenville, Erath County, Texas. He is buried[9] at Zion Hill Cemetery, Comanche, Comanche County, Texas next to Ellen.
