Gabriel Jones, father of Frances (Jones) Burrus (1781-1849), was born around 1760-62 in colonial Virginia. Newly-located research by Mildred Conway Jones has demonstrated that he was not the son of Captain Gabriel Jones II (abt.1740-1777), nor the son of Gabriel Jones, Esq. (1724-1806), known as "The Valley Lawyer". His exact parentage is being sought as his daughter Frances Burrus's maiden name was definitely "Jones" and she named her first son "Gabriel," to honor her father, as was often customary in the family. [1] [2]
Gabriel Jones was most-likely the son of Joshua Isaac Jones (1729-1807) and Isabel (Norman) Jones (1721-1803). Joshua Isaac Jones had been born in Maryland and married Virginia-native Isabel Norman (1721-1803) in Culpeper County, Virginia, in 1750. They had several children, including Benjamin Norman Jones, 1752-1843; and John William Jones, 1755-1838. It's believed he was a descendant of the 17th Century Virginia planter: Richard Jones of York County. [3]
Little is known of this "other" Jones family other than that they were as pro-colonial Americans as their more-celebrated Virginia cousins and that their genealogies are very-often confused & conflated with the other Jones' of Colonial Virginia. John W. Jones was said to have been in the Virginia militia acting as a spy during the Revolutionary War. [3]
Gabriel Jones married a Catherine Walters, born about 1762 in Virginia around 1778. They first lived in Stafford County, Virginia. [4]
At the end of the American Revolution in 1783 a big movement of "old settlers" from the original 13 colonies towards the West began. Gabriel & Catherine Jones moved their family from Stafford County, Virginia, to the still-frontier newly-founded state of Kentucky (1788) during this westward migration.
Gabriel Jones is said to have died about 1832 in Lawrence County, Kentucky, USA. He was around 50 years old. It's not known when his wife, Catherine (Walters) Jones passed away but it's assumed she died in the early 19th Century, also in Kentucky. [4]

I have moved your comment to the G2G "Genealogy Help" forum as that is better suited to get an answer than from me. The Gabriel Jones family I descend from has been pretty-well documented as both Gabriel II and Gabriel Sr. were notables in colonial Virginia. They did Not have a brother named Philip. If I get any replies from the G2G forum (as I moved your post there, I will get emails) I will let you know. Happy Ancestor Hunting! Chet Snow-2128
