The 1900 Census of Franklin County, Georgia listed the couple having been married for 11 years. John was listed as a blacksmith. Around 1901-03, John left Mary and the children and moved to Oklahoma. In 1910, Mary Jordan Owens was listed without John Paul Owens, and with daughters Annie 15, Lillie 13, and Mabel 11. Four boarders were listed, and Mary was the boardinghouse keeper. In 1920 census, Mary was 46 and living with her daughter, Elva Owens Cartledge. Mary was listed as a widow, but her ex- husband was living in Johnston County, OK, with a Chickasaw wife and four children. in 1930, Mary was listed as head of household with a grandson, Hoyt Duncan, age 8, living with her.
"Her grandson Ned Cartledge described Mary Jordan Owens this way: 'I had lived with her for a year, and stayed with her on many of my vacations. She had taught me many of my moral values. She often told me, 'Always be pleasant and friendly. Be honest and truthful, and always pay your debts and 'tote fair'.' He said she ran a small grocery store in Canon, Georgia."
