Alva graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1934 and then worked as an electrician. He married Beatrice Duea in 1935 and had two sons. Alva worked as a welder in 1940 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
In Nov, 1942 Alva went to Africa with the first US Army forces to attack the Germans in World War II. He worked in the 734 Signal Aircraft Warning Corps, using early primitive RADAR to detect incoming German and stringing telephone wire. He was under the direction of the infamous General Patton. Alva was killed in action April 10, 1943 and was temporarily buried at Hadjeb, El Aioun, Tunisia. On June 29, 1948 his body was re-interred with full military honors at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota (He probably died in the Battle of El Guettar: March 30-April 3, 1943).
