Biography

Peter Kearney was born in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland in 1821. His Roman Catholic baptism appears on 1st January 1822, in Kingstown parish, County Dublin. Catholic baptisms in Ireland were rarely more than two or three days after birth, giving a likely birth date of December 1821. He was the fourth of seven children born to Peter Kearney and Elizabeth (Murphy) Kearney of Shankill.

The 1850 US Census places him, age 28, in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts with his brother Nicholas Kearney. He most likely traveled to the United States with his brother sometime between 1846 and 1849, but while Nicholas settled in Massachusetts, Peter was back in Ireland in time to witness at the marriage of his sister Mary Anne Kearney in January 1854. Returning Irish emigrants were rare in the 1850s, but not unknown.

No date of death appears for his mother Elizabeth (Murphy) Kearney. She probably passed away before the introduction of civil death registrations in 1864. His father Peter Kearney passed away a widower, age 82, in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland in 1870, when Peter was age 48.

Peter Kearney was age 57 when he married Jane Toole in St.Peter's, Little Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland in January 1879. She was age 55.

He passed away age 77 in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland in 1899. His effects passed to his nephew Peter Byrne after his death. His wife Jane (Toole) Kearney passed away 8 years later age 84 in 1908. He had no known children. He has no known living descendants.
