When he moved to Alleghany County, NY he settled in the area of the village of Caneadea. His first home was in the lower eastern end of the area known as the Caneadea gorge. Later he moved to the valley at the western end of the gorge and purchased more land and operated sawmills. He was a Baptist, A Republican and later a Prohibitionist.
As his sons, Alfred Riley, Cornelius, Hiram and Aaron Demery grew to manhood and married they purchased farms in the valley and settled there. THe area became known as Kelloggville until 1927. At that time the Rochester Gas & Electric Company purchased the area and constructed a dam in the gorge to form a lake from which the water was used to increase the flow of the Genesee River at Rochester, NY where the company had power plants. It then became known as Rushford Lake and Caneadea Dam. It is now a well-known lake and resort area.
