Alfred Brunson Kephart was born on 25 Jul 1842 in the rural Cottage Hill area of Dubuque County, Iowa Territory, United States. ^[1]

During the Civil War he served with Company H of the 21st Regiment Iowa Infantry. His service record was as follows: In battle Hartsville, Mo., Jan. 11/63. Port Gibson, Miss., May 1/63. Champion Hill, Miss., May 16/63. B. R. B., Miss., May 17/63. Assault of Vicksburg, Miss., May 22/63. Siege of Vicksburg, Miss. Siege of Jackson, Miss. in July 1863. Promoted to 8 Corp. June 1/63, to 7 Corp. July 1/63, to 6 Corp. Nov. 1/63. In siege of Spanish Fort and Blakely, Ala. in April 1865. Discharged in obedience to orders from War Dept. G. O. No. 64. M. D. W. M. at Baton Rouge, La., July 15, 1865. ^[2]

On 26 Dec 1867 Alfred married Mary Brown Meyers. ^[3] Together they had twelve children: ^{[4] [5]}
