Research Notes
The Legend of Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion
Family legend tells a story about Solomon Kerbo who fought in the American Revolution with Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. According to the legend, Francis Marion saved Solomon's life so he named one of his sons Francis Marion Kerbow to honor him. It became family tradition to give the middle name Marion to a son along this line, though some generations were skipped. The rule now is it cannot skip more than one generation.[8]
The legend has been told for generations, but there's a problem. Solomon Kerbo was born in 1776, the year the American Revolution started. Thus, he could not have been the person Francis Marion saved during battle. We know his father Joseph did serve in the revolutionary war, thus it could have been him or another Kerbow relative.
Solomon B. Curbow/Kerbow
Many researchers mistake this person as Solomon B. Curbow who married Darcus Tucker. It is suspected, but not fully proven, that Solomon B. Curbow is actually the son of William Curbow instead.
