Biography

His paternal grandparents were James Kerwin and Mary Quinlan of County Tipperary, Ireland. His grandfather died there, but his grandmother died in Wisconsin in 1877 at the age of 86 years.

Their son, Michael Kerwin, was born in 1815 in County Tipperary, Ireland. In 1844 he went from Ireland to Canada. In 1848 Michael returned to Ireland where he married Mary Buckley (daughter of Walter Buckley and Mary Clary). That same year they emigrated to America and settled on a large farm in the town of Menasha, Winnebago County, Wisconsin where they raised 7 children.

James Charles Kerwin was born on 14 May 1850 on the family farm. He attended high school in Menasha and received his law degree in 1875 from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

James Charles Kerwin married about 1880 to Helen Elizabeth Lawson (1851-1928) and they had four daughters. Their daughter, Grace, married on 27 May 1908, to John Sensenbrenner (son of Frank J. Sensenbrenner, first vice-president of Kimberly-Clark Company).

He practiced law in Neenah, where he served as city attorney for 12 years. He also maintained a law practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA until his obligations in Neenah became too time-consuming.

He was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin. ^[1]

Throughout his professional career, including his 16 years on the judicial bench, he maintained his father's farm in Neenah and kept it in operation until his death on 29 Jan 1921.
