Bernard King was an Australian celebrity chef, television personality, and stage actor. He also gained a reputation for his acerbic statements as a judge on New Faces (Australia), and is regarded as having pioneered television "advertorials" wherein he showed off the use of many sponsor-supplied products.
Bernard James King was born in 1934, in Maleny, Queensland, the son of Francis King and Dorothy Myrtle Doreen White.
As an openly gay man in an era long before same-sex marriage became legal, he never married and was rather known for his lack of a single life-partner. His longest known relationship was 13 years, although he also had a long-term platonic friendship with Sammy Davis Jr. Bernard's flamboyant on-screen persona also had him travel with two well built and barely clad male assistants known as The Bernardettes. These husky sidekicks would appear on cooking shows alongside Bernard, offering "eye candy" to all viewers.
Bernard James King passed away quite suddenly in 2002, and was afterwards cremated with a memorial plaque being added to the marker stone for his parents at the Hemmant Cemetery and Crematorium.[1]
