Horatio appears on the 1860 census in Madison, Alabama, age 22, carpenter, living, along with his older brother George, in the household of his uncle John T. Haden.^[1]

He served in the Civil War on the Confederate side, serving in the 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment (see below records).

His fate is unknown. The last record is a 30 July 1866 estate record for his brother William George Kirkland who had died possessed of 120 acres. Horatio and his sister Sarah J were named as the only heirs of William George. The record notes: ". . . Horatio H. Kirkland having an equal interest in said lands (and an heir at law of the said Wm. G. Kirkland) is not a citizen of the state of Alabama but resides in the county of Fluvanna in the state of Virginia; and Sarah J. Christian, the wife of P. D. Christian, resides in Madison county, Alabama, these being the only heirs . . ." The administrator of William G.'s estate was his uncle, Horatio H. Haden. He had filed original papers to administer the estate in April 1863.^[2]
