Biography

George Knight was born in Lancashire, England.

George was born on 20 August 1877 at 2 Close Street, Castle Hill, Hindley, Lancashire, England the son of Henry Knight and Hannah Cooper. His birth was registered by his father, a Labourer at the Local Board of Health Works, on 14 September 1877.^[1][2] He signed his name with an `X' on the registration form, indicating that he couldn't write. He was baptised on 23 September 1877 at All Saints, Hindley.^[3][4]

In 1881 George, aged 3, was still living at 2 Close Street with his father (39), still working as a labourer, his mother Hannah (39) and five siblings.^[5][6]

By 05 Apr 1891 George was aged 13 and the family had moved next door to 4 Close St. He had started working as a Coal Miner's Drawer. A coal miner's drawer physically pulled coal carts in mines; tough, low-tunnel work often done by children.^[7]

On 26 Aug 1899, George, a bachelor still living at 4 Close Street, aged 22, married Alice Ann Forshaw (24) a spinster from 95 Atherton Road, Hindley at All Saints, Hindley. George's occupation at the time was recorded as a Stripper, which involves removing layers of soil and rock, or "overburden," to expose a coal seam. The fathers were recorded as Henry Knight, deceased and William Forshaw, a collier and the witnesses as James Forshaw and Mary Ann Brooks.^[8][9][10]

By 31 Mar 1901George (23), now a below-ground coal hewer, and Alice (25) had occupied 4 Close St, starting their family with daughter Elizabeth, now aged 1. A below-ground coal hewer was a manual labourer who toiled in mines, extracting coal with hand tools in hazardous conditions.^[11]

In 1911, when aged 33 he was living at 1 Woodland Cottages, Atherton as a cotton spinning worker employed as Stripper and Grinder, a role of maintaining and sharpening carding machines for optimal cotton fibre processing in a textile mill. He was living with Alice and four children.^[12]

In 1939 George (age 62), a Garage Hand, was living at 84 Morris Green Lane, Bolton, Lancashire with Alice.^[13]

George died on 18 Feb 1950 aged 72, at 17 Morris Green Lane, Bolton as a result of lung cancer. His daughter Nellie registered his death on 20 February 1950 when his profession was recorded as a retired labourer at a cotton mill. Administration of his will with the effects valued at £627 11s 3d was granted to Ann, his Widow.^{[14][15][16][17]}
