Biography

Alfred Knight was born in Hampshire, England.

Alfred's birth was registered in the April-June quarter of 1878 in the Alton district of Hampshire, England where his mother's maiden name was recorded as Barnett.^[1] Two months later, on 30 June 1878, he was baptised the son of George Knight, a labourer, and Mercy from the Straits, Binsted, in the Parish of Kingsley, Hampshire.^[2][3]

In the 1881 census, Alfred (2) lived with his parents George (an Agricultural Labourer) and Mercy, along with his siblings, in The Straits, Binsted.^[4]

In the 1891 census, Alfred, who was 12 years old and a scholar, resided in Wheatley, 1.1 miles southeast of Binsted with his parents George (50), who was still working as an Agricultural Labourer, and Mercy (48), a dairy woman, along with his younger siblings.^[5]

During the 1901 census, Alfred was 22 years old and working as a railway porter. He was single and living as a boarder with John Poole, a railway police constable, at 24 Mawby Street, Lambeth, London. This area was part of the Ecclesiastical parish of St Barnabas, South Kennington, located in Lambeth, London.^[6]

Alfred, a bachelor porter living in London, got married to Lizzie Evelyn Scrivener, a 25-year-old spinster living in Froyle, Hampshire on August 12th, 1905 in Froyle when he was 27 years old. Both George Knight and William Scrivener, who were labourers, were the fathers of the couple. The witnesses were Ernest Knight, Alfred's younger brother, Matilda Ellen Scrivener and Ernest William Scrivener.^[7]

In the 1911 census, Alfred was 32 years old and working as a Railway Goods Porter for the London and South Western Railway. He lived at 144 Stewart's Rd, Battersea, London, England with his wife, Lizzie (31), and their two children. They had been married for five years.^[8]

In the 1939 register, Alfred, who was then 61 and incapacitated, still lived with Lizzie and two of their three children at 144 Stewart's Road.^[9]

Alfred passed away in January 1943 at the age of 65. His death was officially recorded in the April-June quarter of 1943 in the Alton district.^[10] On 28 January 1943 he was laid to rest at St. Mary’s churchyard in Upper Froyle near where he and Lizzie were raised.^[11]
