According to his Find A Grave profile,[1] which cites "The History of Jackson County, Mississippi",[2] he was one of nine children born to his parents. His date of birth is given as 15 May 1714 in Neumagen, in today's Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany [1] and a marker for his first wife also gives this date.[3] confirms this date. His last will and testament says he was from Neumaguen, Archbishopric of Treves and that his parents were Juan (or Johann) Krebs and of Anna Charite Fritz. [4] The middle name of "Rene" appears in the Mobile marriage record of his daughters Marie-Jeanne Krebs[5] and Maria Marguerite Krebs[6]and the name Renet appears in the baptism record of at least one of his grandchildren.[7] A look at the actual record confirms that it says Renet for both the child and the paternal grandfather.[8]
Moves to America
Hugo came to America in the 1730's and settled at the Spanish Fort in Pascagoula (Mississippi), which was owned by Joseph Simon dit La Pointe.[1] The Spanish Fort was also known as Fort La Pointe and later Fort Krebs.[9] Hugo married the daughter of Joseph, Marie Josephe Simon dite De La Pointe reportedly on 1 March 1741 in Lake Catahoula, MS according to this profile when I adopted it. A citation is needed for this exact date, although the memorial stone for his wife does indicate they married in 1741.[3] Other family trees without citations give 11 January 1741[10] and a posting by a David Krebs on ancestry.coms surname boards indicates they married in March 1741.[11]
His biography from Find A Grave says the following:[1]
They lived at the Spanish Fort. He was said to have lived like a feudal lord, owned slaves by the hundreds, raised cotton, indigo and rice. He was an inventor as well as a surgeon and farmer. Among the existing relics is proof that he invented a cotton gin 20 years before Eli Whitney. In 1772, Bernard Romans wrote that he saw a roller Cotton Gin on the farm of Mr. Krebs.
On Oct. 20, 1763, there is a declaration by Krebs, surgeon residing in Pascagoula, that he treated a Mr. Laporte who was brought to his residence very ill. Krebs treated him and he died Oct. 5, 1763.
He and Marie Josephe Simon dite La Pointe had six known children before she died in 1751.[3]
Second Marriage
He married Marie Ann Chauvin dite LaJoyeux around 1753 based on the first birth of a known child in late 1754.[12] In 1757 a new building was built at the Fort. Today it is called La Pointe Krebs House Museum and it is said to be the oldest structure in Mississippi and the oldest confirmed building in the entire Mississippi Valley.[13]
Hugo Erastus Krebs wrote his last will and testament on 21 September 1776 in New Orleans, although he did note that he was a resident of Pascagoula. [4] He was ill at the time and likely died soon after. Most of the previously cited family trees do use this as his date of death as does Find a Grave.
Marie Jeanne/Josephe baptized 28 October 1745.[17]; She is called Marie Jeanne in her baptism and marriage record to Antoine Narbonne but called Marie Josephe Narbonne in her father's will. [4]
Daniel Hugo Krebs bn. either Sept. or Dec. 23, 1754.[12] The actual image does not help much as I can't make out what number is before the "bre". The Archives of New Orleans Sacramental Records have transcribed it as 23 September 1754.[20]

Exerpt from his last will and testimony
"...Item: I declare that I have contracted two matrimonies according to the rites of the Holy Mother Church. The first with Maria Simon Lapointe, deceased, from which marriage I had and still have (the following) legitimate and natural children:
Joseph, de Bai, aged 33
Pedro, aged 30
Francisco, aged 32
Augustin, aged 29,
Maria Josepha Narbona aged 28
Margarita aged 27* and another named
Maria Gardinogo, aged 26*
The spelling is Gradenigo, and he was the husband of Margarita
And the second marriage was contracted with Marianna Chavin, alias Joyeuse, and from this marriage we have the following children:
Hugo, aged 20
Raphael, aged 19
Theresa, aged 16
Anna Charite, aged 14
Bazilio, aged 12
Maria Rosa, aged 10
Cecilia, aged 9
Item: I declare that before contracting the second marriage I had an inventory taken of all the goods that remained at the death of my first wife, including appreciation in value, which amounted to 9,000 Pounds, one half o which belonged to me and other half to my children of that marriage as heirs of their mother, and by agreement reached before the Justice of Mobile I consented to give to each one of my siad first children 200 Pesos. I have give to: Francisto 150 Pesos; to Joseph the same amount; to Augustin the same; to Pedro another 150 Pesos;
So that these do not have to receive on account of their mother but another 100 Pesos each, which amounts shall be paid out of my succession.
I also declare that no accounting has been made of the portion which belongs to Maria Josepha Narbona, she having been given nothing.
I also declare that I have paid to Margarita, wife of Gardingo, the portion above mentioned (to my sons) and an additional 100 Pesos should be accounted for out of the corpus of my estate at my death. ...”

Well, the birth order goes by their actual records... birth date when known or baptism date. In the will, he doesn't list them in birth order, he has a 33 year old, followed by a 30-year old, followed by a 32 year old. He lists Marguerite as 27 and Augustin as 29, but if Augustin was born in 1750 as per his baptism record and Marguerite was baptized in 1749... she has to be older than him.
It was my belief that the Marie Gardenigo referred to is actually the same as Marguerite and not truly an additional daughter. I reached this assumption b/c of the married name of Marie Marguerite being used, that a third daughter wasn't mentioned when detailing who has received what prior to death, and that no baptism record has been found by the family researchers. I will email the admin of the site for their take.

A lot of work done on this profile. Nice job! I do note some discrepancies between what is listed on his will and the "known children" with his first wife listed in the biography. I transcribed the portion of his will that names his children and placed it at the bottom of the profile under "see also" for your consideration.
