I first became interested in family history at my great grandmother's kitchen table. I was in middle school and was already a history buff. Relatives were visiting from out of state, and my grandmother was interviewing the guests as we sat at the table regarding memories and genealogy. I remember someone showing a chart with our family name on it in German dating to the 1700s. I was amazed that it was possible to know anything about these people who came so much before us! I have been fascinated with the puzzle of genealogy ever since.

I have lived in the Marshfield, Wisconsin area my whole life. I have been researching family stories on my own for 20+ years and have become the curator of my own family history collection over the years. Many pictures and records have been handed down to me or passed along by other family researchers. I hope to use this platform to preserve their family stories and pass them on to future generations.

As a member of the Marshfield Area Genealogy Group, and current vice-president, I have had some fun in assisting people from around the US with research questions about their local family history. I have had some interesting requests - including some from in the state prison system - and one from Switzerland.

i just discovered this site. i think im related my last name is kraning my family came from bandekow and settled around the greeybay area in wisconsin

Thanks for contacting me. We are more than likely related. My Kroenings are most likely from the area of Maldewin which is near Bandekow. There were a few Kroening families that were in Brown County, WI. The Brown Co Kroenings are not immediately related to my branch which came first to Washington Co, WI and then moved to Marathon Co, but they are probably all branches of the same tree that diverged prior to immigration to the US. I am a distatnt DNA match to the Brown Co and Milwaukee Co Kroenings.

It looks like your immigrant ancestor, Richard Kroning, came to the US in 1880. My family came in 1868. You are lucky that the registers in Bandekow are available online. I've been trying to find the names of my ancestors in the books for years. The name was Kröning in Germany but was changed to the various phonetic spellings after arrival in the US. You should be able to indicate that you've done DNA on your homepage.

Hi J.,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
