Biography

George (Löllbach) Lollback has German Roots.
George (Löllbach) Lollback has roots in the region now known as Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Johann Georg Lellbach was born on 5 February 1812 in Käfertal, near Mannheim, now in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. When he was born, Käfertal sat in the free state of Baden which was part of the Confederation of the Rhine but it is now a district northeast of Mannheim in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region in Baden-Württemberg.

He was the son of Christian Lellbach and Agatha (born Neudörfer). His father was a farmer and local townsperson (German: Bürgern u. Ackersleute). He was baptised the same day in the Lutheran church. He was named for his godfather Johann Georg Ek. The named witnesses were Michel Ek and Theodor Wolfgang, a school teacher.[1]

His family name is uncertain. At least one baptism record shows "Lellbach"; [1] other sources show "Löllbach".[2] Both are recognised names in their own right. His preferred name was Georg or George.

Georg married his 2nd cousin 1x removed Magdalena Schliessmann (whose uncle was married to his sister!!!) in Käfertal in 1835.[2]

In late 1852, Georg and his wife Magdelena emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales with their children on the Helena which arrived in Sydney on 18 March 1853. He was 41 yrs old.[3]

George died in 1882. His death was registered in Grafton (his name recorded as "George Lollback".[4] However, his gravestone in Copmanhurst Cemetery shows George Lollbach.[5]

Johann Georg was a tailor by trade.

Research Notes

1. The Helene passenger list shows Johann Georg Lellbach was a vinedresser and RC (Roman Catholic). Have two men been conflated?
