Biography

Gertrudis was born in 1681. She is the daughter of Tomás de Herrera Sandoval and Pascuala Rivera.

María Gertrudis was born about 1681 to Tomas de Herrera and Pascuala Ribera.[1] She was married to Juan Nuñez in Mexico City when she was 12-years-old and they almost immediately left for New Mexico with the Farfan group of colonists.[1] Sometime after they passed through Zacatecas, he husband was killed in a place called Las Cruces when a wagon fell on him.[2] She continued on to New Mexico and at some point had a child, Miguel.[1] In 1695, she was married in Santa Fe to Juan de Dios Sandoval Martinez.[2] They had four known sons, Juan José (or Juan de Dios), Antonio, Miguel, and Feliciano Antonio.

  1. Her name on the Farfan colonists lists was María Gertrudis de la Candelaria Herrera. Her marriage record says María Gertrudis de la Concepción Herrera.
