Juan de Dios was born about 1658 in Mexico City to Jacinto de Sandoval Martinez and Juana de Estrada.[1] In 1674 he married Juana Hernandez[1] and they had at least three children: Miguel born about 1675, María Magdalena born in 1688, and Lorenza María Guadalupe born in 1691.[2] In 1693 they joined the colonists from Mexico City moving to New Mexico.[3] The leader of the expedition was specifically recruiting craftsmen who were married with families. As a tailor, Juan de Dios was exactly what they were looking for.[3]
Once in New Mexico, they stayed in Santa Fe until it was time to move to the new villa Santa Cruz de la Cañada. While still in Santa Fe, Juana died in March of 1695[4] and within six weeks, Juan de Dios had settled on his new wife, Maria Gertrudis de la Concepción de Herrera. They were married in May.[4] They had four known sons, Juan José (or Juan de Dios), Antonio, Miguel, and Feliciano Antonio, but most likely there were more.
In the record for his first marriage, Juan de Dios stated his parents were Nicolas de Arias and Juana de Estrada.[1] However, in the prenuptial investigation for his second marriage, his parents are named Jacinto Sandoval Martinez and Juana de Estrada.[4] Juan used Sandoval Martinez as his surname in both records. Possibly his biological father was Nicolas Arias but he used Sandoval Martinez, the surname of his stepfather.
Juan was born about 1655.
