Biography

Emmitt Theodore Landes, known as ET, was born in 1862 on a farm near the Natural Chimneys, now a Virginia State Park at Mount Solon, VA. He was the next to last of 12 children of David Landes and Catherine Reeves. The 1870 and 1880 show him living in Augusta County, Virginia, with his parents and siblings.[1][2]ET left home at age 20 or in 1882 for Bath Township, Allen County, Ohio where other relatives had previously settled. ET gained farm labor employment with Jacob Brower Leedy and Christena Cupp (Miller) Leedy who were the parents of thirteen children. The second eldest of their children, Edna Margaret Leedy and ET were about the same age. They "fell in love" and in 1886 were married. [3] Their first child Charles, my paternal grandfather, was born in January 1888. Of interest to me as a kid, was the fact that the youngest sibling of Great Grandma Edna, John Leedy whom I knew as Uncle John, was a year younger than my Grandpa Charles, his nephew. This same Uncle John married Maggie Rusmisel who was the sister of my paternal Grandma Willa Augusta Rusmisel. Both Rusmisel girls (Willa and Maggie) following the migration pattern had left Mount Solon, VA in 1908 to find work out west in Ohio where they too worked for my great-great grandparents Jake and Christena Leedy. So, Grandma Willa met Grandpa Charles thru work as did Great Aunt Maggie and Great Uncle John. Great Uncle John Leedy was my Great Uncle by marriage and Great-Great Uncle by pedigree. Great-grandparents Edna and ET had four children, the last or youngest was Aunt Blanche who was born in 1895. Great Grandma Edna, sadly died of an unknown cause on 25 October 1903. ET as a widower with four young children then married Mary Ann Byerly, who was the second child and daughter of George and Sarah Leedy (Miller) Byerly. [4] This relationship also is of special interest since Mary Ann Byerly, who was deceased before I was born, had been the much older sister of my other grandfather or maternal Grandpa Chester J. Byerly. ET and Mary Ann had no children. The 1910, 1920, and 1930 census show Emmett and Mary living in Allen County, Ohio.[5][6][7] Mary died in 1935. Great-grandpa ET was a farmer as were most men at that time who lived a rural life. He died in Florida in 1940 at age 78 [8],about three months after I was born. If you have read this far, then you may have noticed that my paternal great-great-grandmother Christena Cupp (Miller) Leedy was mentioned as was my maternal great grandmother Sarah Leedy (Miller) Byerly. Even though they were a generation apart these two ladies shared the same great-great-grandparents: Lodowich Bechtol Miller/Mueller and Anna Barbara Meyer Miller/Mueller. Lodowich Miller was the son of the immigrant Johann Michael Muller/Mueller. (This biography by James Landes 2Sep2017 )

Research Notes

There are citations that support that after Emmett's 2nd wife died in 1935, that he married a widow by the name of Lola May (Stinson) Grubbs in Indiana in 1936. There are not enough source citations at this time to create a profile for her.
