John Wesley Lang was a Civil War veteran. Documents in his pension file attest he enlisted at Savannah, Georgia on 03 April 1864 and served first aboard the CSS Sampson under Captain Thomas B. Mills. After the fall of Savannah, John W. Lang was transferred to the Mobile [Alabama] squadron. As a member of the crew of the CSS Nashville, "...a large side-wheel steam casemate ironclad built by the Confederates late in the American Civil War...," he surrendered at Nanna Hubba Bluff on the Tombigbee River in north Mobile County, Alabama in May 1865 and was parolled.[13][14]

By occupation, John Wesley Lang was a carpenter and machinist.[15][5][6][7][16] According to one descendant, he "...repaired huge tractors, farm equipment, etc. He was the only one around for miles that did this, so he was always busy. The side yard was covered with machine parts."[17]

John Wesley Lang passed away on 10 October 1913 in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida. He was buried in Saint John's Cemetery, Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida.[18]
