Biography of Agnes Gertrude Lavelle Fagan

When Agnes Gertrude Lavelle was born on March 2, 1899, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, her father, Bernard Marion Lavelle , was 32 and her mother,Julie Friedling, was 26. She was the fifth out of eight children born to Bernard and Julie, a German immigrant.

According to the 1900 and 1910 US Census, in 1900, Agnes Lavelle was less than a year old and lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her father, mother, and 4 sisters. By 1910, Agnes Lavelle was 10 years old and another sister was born, plus a brother joined the all girl family.


Roy and Agnes Fagan.

At the age of 17, she married Roy C. Fagan on June 30, 1916 in Allegheny County. PA. The couple moved to Braddock, PA and lived on the same street, Corey Avenue, as Roy's parents. By 1920, they had two children. Charles Roy Fagan was born Jan 24, 1917 and Agnes Ruth Fagan was born June 18, 1918. The family attended St. Brendan's RC Church in Braddock and the children attended Catholic school.

Between 1920 and 1930, both Agnes and Roy moved to his parent's home at 527 Corey Avenue and both widowed fathers resided with the couple and their children. In 1940, both fathers had passed away and Ruth was 21 and Roy Jr. 23. He was working in the steel mill. In 1942, Ruth got married and Roy, Jr. was enlisted into the Army.

In August of 1944, terrible news came in the form of a Western Union telegram, announcing to Agnes and Roy that their son, Roy Jr. had been killed in action in France. This was a difficult time for both Roy and Agnes.

After WWII they moved out of Braddock to a suburban home at 801 Lynda Lane, North Versailles, PA. Here they were closer to Ruth and her family, Raymond Barr and their two children.

In 1959, Roy passed away from a heart attack, and Agnes moved to North Versailles to live two doors from her daughter's house on Woodland Road. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who called her GG. She passed away on June 14, 1987 in North Versailles , PA.
