James Lawrence was born in Georgia.

James was born about 1864, towards the end of war, on the plantation owned by Allen Lawrence Sr.. 1870 and 1880 shows James's parents working as farm hands for William Vaughan during his childhood. He was born between after the 1860 Slave Schedule so he does not show in the census. James was the son of Julius Vaughan and Mary Vaughan.
