James was born about 1864, towards the end of war, on the plantation owned by Allen Lawrence Sr.. 1870 and 1880 shows James's parents working as farm hands for William Vaughan during his childhood. He was born between after the 1860 Slave Schedule so he does not show in the census. James was the son of Julius Vaughan and Mary Vaughan.
1870 census James (age 9) was in Eatonton, Putnam, Georgia.[1]Enumerated: Mary Vaughn age 28, David Vaughn age 8, Jerry Vaughn age 6, Georgiann Vaughn age 4, Sarah A Vaughn age 9 months and Laura Vaughn age 14 (Farm Laborer).
