Biography

John was baptised at St Johns, Portsea, Hampshire, England on 11 October 1821.^[1] He is the son of John Lawson and Elizabeth Jolliffe.

John's father (a naval surgeon) died before September 1824.^[2] His mother married for a second time in 1827 to William Lawrence Lyne.^[3][4] William, Elizabeth and their children emigrated to New Zealand in 1842.^[5] John did not go with them.
