Biography

Birth

Charlotte Mabel LeMay was born on Apr 24, 1885, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to David LeMay and Sarah Reiling[1]. Sarah's surname is sometimes spelled Rehling. Charlotte was the first child of their union, and it appears she was named after Sarah Reiling's mother, Charlotte Fleming (1841-1906).

In 1900, Charlotte still lived at home with her parents, David 46 and Sarah M 31, and siblings David F 10, Henry Clayton 6 and Fenellie V 3, in Washington, Allen County, Indiana [2]

Marriage

Charlotte LeMay was only 17 when she married first Abraham Charles Deardorff on Feb 27, 1900, in Fort Wayne, Indiana [3].

This does not appear to have been a happy marriage. Both parties were underage, but their parents gave written consent for them to be married [4]. The reason for this may be that Charlotte was pregnant. Another newspaper article reports that affidavit was filed in court against Abraham Charles Deardorff alleging paternity and this was dismissed after he married Charlotte. But then, according to the article, he immediately deserted Charlotte. He was found two years later and arrested on the street for unlawfully deserting his wife and held in jail to await trial [5]

Children

with Abraham Deardorff:

  1. Frederick Wayne Deardorff 9/9/1901-4/19/1970 [6]

with Charles Hunsche:

  1. Mary Jane Hunsche 3/17/1918-2/7/1943 [7]
  2. Helen Elizabeth Hunsche (m. Richard L. Camp) 6/2/1919-10/31/1992 [8]
  3. Henry Robert Hunsche 4/11/1922-8/9/1978 [9]
  4. Walter Fredrick Hunsche 9/26/1929-3/20/1937 [10][11]

According to their death certificates, two of Charlotte's children with Charles Hunsche died young. Walter died aged 7 from kidney problems. Mary Jane aged 23 died from epilepsy.

In 1910, Charlotte aged 25 was living with her parents, David 56 and Sarah 41, and her siblings: Floyd 20, Harry Clayton 16, Nellie 15, Bessie 7, and her son Frederick Deardorff aged 8. She worked as an inspector at Wayne Knitting Mills. She could read and write. They lived on Fourth Street in Fort Wayne[12].

By 1920, Charlotte 30 lived with her husband Charles 40 and their children Mary Jane 3 and Helen E 7 months old, on Third St., a few blocks from her parents, in Fort Wayne, Indiana [13]. According to Fred Deardorff's son, Fred had left home to live with his Uncle Floyd in Chicago.

In 1930, Charlotte 46 lived with her husband Charles 50, and their children Mary Jane 12, Helen Elizabeth 10, Henry R 8, and Walter F 6 months old, in Fort Wayne at 1307 Barthold St. Charles' brother, Henry, 53, also lived with them [14]. The house is still standing today.

In 1940, the family is still mostly living together, with Charlotte 54 and Charles 59, Mary Jane 22, Helen E 20, Robert 18. The highest grade in school that Charlotte completed was 6th grade. They are living in the same house [15]

By 1950, Charlotte 64 was widowed and living with her daughter Helen E 30 and her husband Richard Camp 35, and their three children Richard L 8, Robert M 5, and Dan C 1 year old. Charlotte was working as a cook in a restaurant. They lived at 4610 Smith St, in Fort Wayne [16].
