Biography

Jowan Le Besco has had a number of jobs in the French film industry, notably as a cinematographer, actor, and Assistant Director. He comes from a family of accomplished and award-winning actors and film-makers, largely due to the efforts of his actress mother, Catherine Belkhodja, to get her children into the film industry.

Growing up in the 1990s Jowan studied at Lycée Charlemagne and Lycée Victor Hugo in Paris, two secondary schools renowned for their academic excellence.

Jowan then started cinema studies at the Paris Sorbonne University of Jussieu, during which he directed a large number of short films. An award received for one of his short films won him editing software, which he used in a number of music video clips.

He then decided to further his studies at the Lyon Institut Lumière and Paris Gobelins School.

As a teenage actor, Jowan's first role was a small part as Le garçon in the award-winning 1999 short film, La puce, which starred his then teenage sister, Isild Le Besco, and also featured their real-life mother Catherine as the mother of Isild's character.

Preferring to work behind the scenes rather than on screen, In 2000 he won an award for best Junior script at the Paris Film Festival for Demi-tarif (as camera operator).

Other small roles and odd film jobs followed. In the 2000s Jowan worked as Second Unit or Assistant Director on several feature films, including another one starring his sister Isild, the award-winning L'intouchable (The Untouchable) (2006).

But Jowan has most made his mark as a cinematographer over the past decade, including on the major Hollywood release, Manhattan Romance (2013), which also starred his sister Isild.
