Nicolas Legouffe is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.
Nicolas Dégouffe (sic) was born on 26 June1795 to Jean Baptiste Dégouffe (sic) and Marine Labreque Doiron.
[1][2]
He was baptized on 11 November 1795 in the presence of godparents Mathurin Leblanc and Marguerite Bernard by L.J. Dejardins, priest, from St. Joseph Parish in Carleton, Bonaventure County, Québec, on the north shore of Chaleur Bay in the Gaspésie. His father was listed as deceased. His mother's name was Marie La Breque Doiron.
[1]
He was likely baptized at the new church built in 1795 to replace the first chapel constructed in 1772.
[3]
This community, which was settled in 1756 by Acadians exiled by Le Grand Dérangement, was originally known as Tragadigash (or Tracadièche), but when Nicholas was born it was Saint-Joseph de Carleton parish and is now called Carleton-sur-Mer.
