David was born about 1960 in Fall River, Massachusetts to Manuel Leite de Melo and Elvira Costa . Both parents are of Azorean heritage.
David grew up in Swansea, Massachusetts.
He is a Portuguese American chef, food writer, and writer/owner of the website "Leite's Culinaria" (https://leitesculinaria.com/). His website was the first to win the James Beard Award.
He wrote the cookbook, "The New Portuguese Table" which was awarded the 2010 IACP First Book Award and the Julia Child Award. In 2012, his website was inducted into the Culinary Hall of Fame.
He has also written a memoir titled "Notes on a Banana: Food, Love, and Manic Depression" published in 2017 which details his childhood, his homosexuality, and his diagnosis of manic depression.
