George Leith was born in 1796 in Shenandoah, Virginia to Ebenzer Leith and Nancy Anne McKay. He married Elizabeth Branner on November 10, 1818, in Dandridge, Tennessee. They had ten children in 23 years. He died on October 7, 1844, in Walker, Alabama, at the age of 48.

Military
George Leith served his country during the Seminole Indian Wars in Florida. He served three months under General Cox, three months under General Henderson, and three under General Jackson, all voluntary terms.[2]
