Geographical Note: This family came from near Inverurie, now in Aberdeenshire. Kirkton of Rayne (church town of Rayne) is a property near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, held by the Leslie of Balquhain and passed, in marriage, to the family of Leith. Edengarioch is a property that neighbours Kirton of Rayne and both are within the modern Parish of Chapel of Garioch, Aberdeenshire.

Biography

Laurence was the son of Patrick Leith, of Likliehead and Jean Leslie, stated in the source to be the daughter of 7th Baron of Balquhain, who was William. ^[1][2] The property of Kirkton of Rayne was one of Jean's fathers properties and was granted as dower on her marriage.

His date of birth is not provided in the source. His mother is thought to have been born c. 1510 (see her profile for the estimate) and thus his parents marriage likely c. 1530/35. The marriage to his first wife, Agnes Leslie, daughter of Alexander Leslie of Wardis, is said to have occurred in 1580.^[3] This was her second marriage and we might presume she was c. 25. From this it is estimated that he was born c. 1550.

Family

He married, firstly, Agnes Leslie (as her second husband), daughter of Alexander Leslie, 3rd of Wardis and Margaret Forbes.^[4]

He married, secondly, Bessie Gordon, daughter of Sir George Gordon of Cocklarochie.

Note on children. On the peerage.com website the son John is given as a son of his first wife, Agnes Leslie. However in Davidson's work on the family the son, John, is given as a son to his second wife, Bessie Gordon.^[5] John, as son of second wife, also appears on other Burke sources.
