Biography

James was born in 1833. He passed away in 1880. A family tradition believes that James was at one time the Squire of Norley in Cheshire and lived at Norley Hall and he was a grandson of George IV and his mistress Mrs Mary Lewis.. He also was the innkeeper of the Tiger Head Inn in Norley. He fell on hard times and became a gamekeeper near Manchester before moving to Australia in 1875. He arrived on the "Surrey" to Sydney in 1875 with his wife and children. He joined his wife's West relatives in Corowa. The family also moved to New Zealand for a year but returned to New South Wales in 1881 where James died soon after of consumption. Family tradition states that as a young man he was thrown by his friends in the pond at the Tiger Head Inn and this was what began his health problems.

James's father Samuel is confirmed by dna from ancestry.com Thru Lines in which three descendants of James Lewis b.1833 match with three descendants of James' sister Mary Burnett (nee Lewis) b.1823. (7 August 2020)
