Biography

Sarah Lindsay was born about 1781 in Prince George's county, Maryland.^[1] She was the daughter of John Lindsay and Catherine Lindsay. Sarah Lindsay and "Deliah" Elder were issued a marriage license on 7 November 1798 in Baltimore county, Maryland.^[2] They were married on 13 November 1798.^[3]

Sarah and Dele had the following children:^[3]

Sarah and Dele moved west, to Laurenceburgh, Deaborn county, Indiana, before 1810. Letters to them from Sarah's parents, John and Catherine Lindsay, were found years later and described in a 1926 column written by Kate Millner Rabb in the Indianapolis Star.^[4]

Dele Elder died in 1829 and Sarah did not remarry. In 1850, she was living in Laughery, Dearborn county, Indiana with two teen-aged Elder males, William and John.^[5] In 1860, Sarah was living in the household of Ham Smith in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn county.^[6]

She died on 18 March 1864 in Dearborn county, Indiana.^[7] She was probably buried at a family cemetery although no tombstone remains to verify this.^[8]

1. ↑ Many online family trees state that she was born in 1784. The 1850 census indicates she was born in 1781 and the 1860 census suggests she was born in 1784. However, since she was married in 1798 (see source below), it is more likely she was born in 1781 than in 1784. No birth or baptismal record has yet been found for her.
