Research Notes

  • Numerous, but unsourced, family trees depict Catharina Loescher as the third wife of Abraham Van Steenbergh (1751-1809). When Abraham (born 1780) and his wife Catherine were found in the 1850 and 1860 Census, it became clear that the older Abraham was not the husband of Catharina Loescher or the father of her children.

Determining the parentage of Catharina Loescher wife of Abraham D. Van Steenbergh:

  • Catharina is noted as having been born in about 1779 or 1781, per census records. She stated she was born in Columbia County, New York on the 1855 State Census.
  • Catharina Lescher christened 30 November 1776 Germantown, Columbia County, New York, a daughter of Phillip Lescher and Elisabeth Schuhmacher. Sponsors: Michel Schuhmacher and Catharina his wife. The first two children of Abraham and Catharina Loescher Van Steenbergh were named Philip and Elizabeth. Catharina's brother, Johannes, and his wife, Lena, were the sponsors for the baptism of Abraham and Catharina's son, Jan.
