Gwendoline was born in 1901[1] in Filey, Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of John Long and Lydia Gibson. The family had settled in Eastrington, Yorkshire, by the time of the 1911 census. Gwendoline's father was a police constable.[2][3]
At the time of the 1939 Register, Gwendoline lived in Crayford, Kent, with her sister-in-law, Alice Grace Long. She worked as a general domestic servant.[4]
