Biography

Amanda Lowe was born in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas in 1830 - the daughter of John Lowe and Mary Sawyer.

She married Benjamin "Pump" Saunders (1819-1892) in the Bahama Islands about 1848 - 1849.

Amanda Lowe Saunders emigrated to Key West in 1885.

At the time of the US Census of 1900, Amanda was widowed and living in the home of her son James Maxwell Saunders. (Maxwell was born in August 1871.) The census reported that Amanda had borne eight (sic!) children, all of whom were alive in 1900.

Her brother Eldridge lived with her.

Amanda's son John Patrick Saunders (b. Aug 1851) and Mary J. Lowe-Saunders of Green Turtle Cay lived next door with their 8 children Edwin, Stanley, John Appleton, Berlin etc.
