Obituary

NOBLE COUNTY REPUBLICAN, SEPTEMBER 22, 1881

Sarah James departed this life Aug. 27th, 1881. Aged 87 years 1 month and 28 days.

The deceased was born in Culpepper, Virginia, July 1st, 1794, and moved with her parents to Morgan County, Ohio, in the year 1800. Was married to Hollis James and for 35 years they fought life's battles side by side. He departed this life in 1846 and she remained his widow until death.

She united with the U.B. Church and remained a faithful christian until death, which took place at her sons, Dennis James, in Goshen Twp., Hardin Co., Ohio. She was a mother of sixteen children, eleven sons and five daughters, seven sons departed this life before her and four sons and five daughters remain; her children, grand-children and great-grand-children together number two hundred and seventeen.

All her children living, except one daughter were with her to care for and administer to her wants in her dying hour and all that loving hearts and willing hands could do was done, but death had marked her for its victim, and as the angel of death hovered over her dying couch, she seemed to realize that the time for her departure was drawing near; as her friends stood around her bed she took them one by one by the hand, calling each one by name, and bade them a last farewell; to her son Dennis and his wife with whom she had lived for the last 21 years she thanked them again and again for always being so kind to her while she made her home with them. Her funeral services were conducted by Rev. Geo. B. Caster, Monday Aug. 20th at 4 o'clock at the Good Hope Church, and her remains were laid in their last resting place in Good Hope Cemetery attended by a large number of relatives and friends.

Her life's work is ended Her troubles are o'er She has landed triumphant On Caanan's bright shore.
