Biography

Ida was born in June 1875 in Cherry Island, Plaistow, the first born child of William Lydiard and Eliza Hynson.[1] It's unclear where the name Ida comes from, but she was using this name solely from at least 1893.[2][3][4][5]

The family emigrated to Australia as free settlers, departing London on August 8th, 1876, on-board a ship called the Erato.[3] They arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia on November 13th, after a two week delay due to unfavourable winds. The remainder of Ida's siblings were born in South Australia, she being the old child to make the journey.[5]

Ida was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide, on February 2nd, 1882. She was baptised on the same day as her siblings William, Percy and Florence.[6]

She married David Adams, a Greek Cypriot, in January 1893, while only 17 years of age.[2][5][3] The marriage could have been a shotgun wedding, because Ida's only child, Olga, arrived in September of the same year. Unfortunately for Ida, Olga was born in the Lying-In Home, part of the South Australian Destitute Asylum. This was due to David taking off to Western Australia and her mother and step-father being unable to take care of her.[3]

According to Ida's death certificate, the family moved to Newcastle in about 1896.[5] It's unclear when David returned from Western Australia and then what drew the family to move such a large distance in the other direction. Newcastle is on the east coast of Australia, north of Sydney.

Ida passed away on October 20th, 1899, in the Newcastle Hospital due to an ectopic pregnancy with her second child.[5] She was only 24 years old. She is buried in the Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle, with her funeral taking place on October 22nd.[5][7]
