Hector was the first Chief to become Protestant. He sided with MacDonald of Islay at the Battle of Benvigory in 1598. There, the MacLeans of Duart defeated MacDonald of Islay as punishment for the murder of the Duart Chief, Hector "Eachuinn Mór" MacLean.
Hector was imprisoned, for six months, by Allan Cameron of Lochiel. He was married to Margaret Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, second of Lochnell. They had four sons: Hector Odhar, Charles, Ewen, and Allan.
