Rites on Tuesday.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Chaffin, 71, who died in a local hospital about 8 o'clock Sunday morning following a lingering Illness, will held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Dowling chapel. The Rev. C. J, Taber will officiate. Interment will be in the Corvallis cemetery beside her husband, J. A. Chaffin who died in 1939.


Mrs. Chaffin, who was born April 26 1872 in Sparta, .MO, had been in ill health for about three years. During the winter she spent two months with a daughter ln Portland, Ore., returning April 13 and entering the hospital the same evening for medical attention.


She came to the valley ln 1892 from Sparta and had made her home in the Corvallis vicinity most of the time since then. She had been an active member of the Christian church until about three years ·ago.

Is survived by five daughters, Mrs. .Marie Peterson, Portland, Ore.: Mrs. Ruby Philips, North Hollywood, Calif.; Mrs. Ivy Messersmith, Corval­lis; Mrs. Myrtle Foley, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Effie Osburn, ·Hamilton; four sons, Arthur Chaffin, Helena; Lonnie Chaffin, Seattle, Wash.; Earl Chaffin, Portland, Ore., and Ray Chaffin, Corvallis; three sisters. Mrs. Martha Carlson, Hamilton; Mrs. Addie Lewis, Brown Branch, Mo., and another slater, Rosie, in Spokane, Wash., and two brothers, Jesse Mackey, Seattle, Wash., and Frank Mackey, Oklahoma City, Okla.


Five of Mrs. Chaffin’s grandsons were in the service of the armed forces when death claimed her. They are : Ernest Osburn in gunnery school at the Memphis Naval base in Tennessee; Glen Osburn in Pacific Navy service; Jamie Osburn with the Army in Italy; Eddie Chaffin with the Army in Alaska; Teddy Chaffin, survivor of the USS Marblehead bombing serving in the Pacific.


The husband, James Chaffin was a member of the 1864 emigrant part ot come to the Bitter Root valley from Missouri and Kansas. His death occurred December 20, 1939. [2]
