Biography

Mariah Macklin was born on 8 March 1832 in Fairfield County, Ohio to Samuel Macklin and Eliza Ann Arnold [1] [2]. In many documents her first name was either “Maria” or “Mary”. Mariah was the second child out of 4 children to Samuel Macklin and Eliza Ann Arnold. In 1837, Mariah’s mother died when she was 4 years of age. Two years later Mariah’s father married her mother’s sister, Elisabeth Arnold. In 1840 census, her family consisting of her father, her new mother, and 4 children, most likely Eli, Mariah, Lucy, and Mary were living in Pleasant Township, Fairfield County, Ohio [3]. In 1850, the family was still living in Pleasant Township, Fairfield County, Ohio on the family farm [1]. The family consisted of her parents, Mariah who was 18 years of age, 1 brother Eli, 1 sister Lucy, and 3 half-brothers, Jacob, William, and Perry. It is unknown where his half-brother Benjamin was living since, he was not listed.

On 20 March 1856, Mariah Macklin married George Hiram Rutter in Hancock County, Ohio [4] [5]. through this union the couple would have 6 children who all lived to adulthood. In 1860, Mariah was 27 years of age living with her husband and 2 children Malissa Jane and Thomas Crawford in Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio [6]. George was a farmer. Later in 1860 Mariah’s younger sister died at the age of 26 years. A few years later in 1864, Mariah’s oldest half-brother Jacob died. In 1870, the family now consisting of the parents and 4 children, Melissa Jane, Thomas Crawford, Harriet Eliza, and William Nelson, were living in Pleasant Township, Hancock County, Ohio [7]. In 1880, the family was still living on the family farm in Pleasant Township, Hancock County, Ohio [8]. By this time the couple’s oldest daughter Melissa was married but the remaining 5 children, Thomas Crawford, Harriet Eliza, William Nelson, Lemuel Clark, and Florence Ardella, were living at home. Several of the older boys helped their father with farming the land. In 1891, when Mariah was 59 years of age her husband George Hiram Rutter died. In 1900 the census found Mariah living by herself listed as a landlord in Pleasant Township, Hancock County, Ohio most likely on the family farm [2]. In the next home listed is her youngest son Lemuel Clark Rutter, his wife, and a 13-year-old brother-in-law. In 1902, Mariah’s other sister Lucy died.

On 21 March 1905, Mariah died. She was buried next to her husband in McComb Union Cemetery in McComb, Hancock County, Ohio [9]. Mariah was survived by her 6 children, Melissa Jane (Rutter) Sholty, Thomas Crawford Rutter, Harriet Eliza (Rutter) Pickens, William Nelson Rutter, Lemuel Clark Rutter, and Florence Ardella (Rutter) Vanscoyoc.
