Biography

John Maddocke was baptized on January 29, 1573 at St John the Baptist church in Chester, Cheshire, England.[1] Although his parents weren't named in the church baptismal record, careful research has determined that his father was Ralph Maddock, a baker of Chester and a member of St John the Baptist church.

John Maddocke Baptism

John Maddock was the son of Raphe or Ralph Maddock, who was also known to be a baker by trade.[2][3] John Maddock, the son of Ralph Maddock, was granted admission as a freeman of the city of Chester circa 1595.[4] Freeman status was either achieved by apprenticeship[5] or by birthright. He was then allowed to set up his bakery business, which would have involved having a special permit for a large bread oven. These ovens were subject to an old time fire code. Church records do not indicate when he was married or the name of his wife.

John Madock, son of Ralph

John Maddock was named in the 1604 probate of Raphe Maddock, baker, at the city of Chester, Cheshire, England.[6]

John Maddock was a prosperous baker in the city of Chester.[7] He also owned property on both sides of the Chester city wall. One small house on Cow Lane (now Frodsham Street) was outside of the eastern city wall. This house was willed to his daughter Elizabeth in 1639.[8] Six years later, in 1645, the homes on the east side of the city wall were purposely burned down during the English Civil War. This was a preventive measure against an attack from Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarian roundheads.

John Maddock's bakery was large enough that he was able to employ apprentice bakers.[9] Two men were specifically known to serve apprenticeships at John Maddock's Chester bakery: John Knowles served an apprenticeship there in 1608 and 1609,[10] and Richard Walton first apprenticed with John Maddock in 1615 and 1616.[11] Knowles and Walton both maintained their connection with John Maddock for many years. Both men served as witnesses to the Last Will and Testament of John Maddock in 1639.[12]

In his will of 1639, John Maddock, baker of Chester, named five children: Thomas, Anne, Elizabeth, Jane and Margaret. John Maddock's son, Thomas Maddock, was definitely also known to be a baker. Thomas inherited the Maddock family bakery.[13] Daughter Elizabeth inherited a small house outside the Chester city wall. Additional information gleaned from the will indicates that John was a member of St. John the Baptist church of Chester, and that his wife had died earlier. In reviewing St John the Baptist church records, the baptisms of only three of John Maddock's five children have been located. Elizabeth, Jane and Margaret were known to be christened there.[14]

There may be a problem with this John Maddock. When son Thomas was born, John was a tanner. When this John died he was a baker. I doubt he changed occupations and needs to be researched further.

You are correct. In looking at the original church christening, it clearly says that John Maddock is a tanner:

"England, Cheshire Parish Registers, 1538-2000," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQW2-M43 : 7 December 2017), Thomas Maddock, 18 Jul 1620, Christening; citing item 2 p 61, , Chester, Cheshire, England, Record Office, Chester; FHL microfilm 2,045,920.

I will keep searching for another baptism record.

Additionally, the Thomas Maddock in question, the son of the tanner, John Maddock, died at the age of about 2 weeks old:

I did find another Thomas Maddock, son of John, christened in February of 1611/1612:
