Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Wiley Madry is a part of US Black heritage.

Wiley was born about 1808. His son's statement in a 1907 Cherokee Application indicates that Wiley was born into slavery. He passed away in 1884.

Wiley was the grandson of William Maddrey. He may have a brother named Jesse. William gave Wiley and Jessie land in Northampton Co., North Carolina. He gave Wiley two slaves names Mary and Abram in 1820. William Maddrey died about 1826. Wiley married Nancy Jenkins about January 1830. Wiley and Nancy remained in Northampton Co., North Carolina until about 1833.

Wiley and Nancy relocated to Logan Co., Ohio. They first appear in the 1840 census with their five children. Nancy died about 1844 in Logan Co., Ohio. Wiley married Eliza Seaman in 1845 in Logan Co., Ohio. Wiley and Eliza moved to Calvin twp., Cass Co., Michigan between 1850 and 1860. He purchased 40 acres of land in the NE¼ if the SW¼ of Sec. 23 of T7S R14W. He lived on this farm until he died in 1884.

Research Notes

Still trying to identify the name and race of Wiley's parents. His surname suggests that his father was William Maddrey's son. Since Wiley was labeled as mulatto and he was in danger of being enslaved, his mother was likely an African-America who was enslaved at the time of Wiley's birth.

In 1826, a law was enacted that made it illegal for free Negroes to move from another state into North Carolina. William Maddrey's will does not indicate that his grandsons Jesse and Wiley were living in another state in 1820. The Northampton Co. tax records show that Jesse and Wiley were living there before 1826 and that this law did not apply to them.
