Biography

Birth and Baptism
Thomas was born at Hibaldstow, Lincolnshire, in 1811, the son of Richard Marris and his wife Mary, née Hall, who had been married at Barnetby le Wold on 31 May 1791.[1][2] Thomas was baptized at St Hybald's church, Hibaldstow, on 17 November 1811.[3][4]

Marriage
Thomas married Mary Hunt by licence at St Radegunda's church, Grayingham, Lincolnshire, on 7 September 1837. Thomas was described as a Bachelor of Full Age, occupation Labourer, resident at Grayingham, son of Richard Marris, a Labourer. Witnesses were Maria Clifton and Thomas Stephenson.[5][6][7]

Children
Thomas and Mary had nine children:

  1. Hannah, born at Scotter, Lincolnshire, in 1839[8] and baptized at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 3 February 1839. Thomas' occupation was Carrier.[9][10] Hannah died at Scotter on 1 October 1845[11][12] and was buried at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 3 October 1845.[13][14]
  2. Mary, born at Scotter in 1841[15] and baptized at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 21 February 1841. Thomas' occupation was Labourer.[16][17]
  3. Jane, born at Scotter in 1843[18] and baptized at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 14 May 1843. Thomas' occupation was Labourer.[19][20]
  4. Henry, born at Scotter in 1845[21] and baptized at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 31 August 1845. Thomas' occupation was Labourer.[22][23]
  5. George, born at Scotter in 1848[24] and baptized at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 15 October 1848. Thomas' occupation was Carrier.[25][26]
  6. Hannah, born at Scotter in 1851[27] and baptized at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 6 April 1851. Thomas' occupation was Carrier.[28][29]
  7. Robert, born at Scotter in 1853[30] and baptized at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 27 March 1853. Thomas' occupation was Carrier.[31][32]
  8. Hunt, born at Scotter in 1855[33] and baptized at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 11 February 1855. Thomas' occupation was Carrier.[34][35]
  9. Emma, born at Scotter in 1858.[36]

1841 Census
The 6 June 1841 census records Thomas, a 25 year old Agricultural Labourer, living at Scotter Wood Houses, with his wife Mary and children Hannah (2) and Mary (4 months).[37]

1851 Census
The 30 March 1851 census records Thomas, a 39 year old Carrier and Farmer of 10 Acres, living at West Street, Scotter, with his wife Mary, and children Mary (10), Jane (8), Henry (5), George (2), and Hannah (infant). The family had two servants, Sarah Skinner, a House Servant, and Rueben Barren, a Farm Servant.[38]

1861 Census
The 7 April 1861 census records Thomas, a 49 year old Carrier & Butcher, occupying a Butcher's shop on the West side of the River, with his wife Mary, and children Mary (20), Jane (18), Henry (16), George (13), Hannah (11), Robert (9), Hunt (7), and Emma (3).[39]

1871 Census
The 2 April 1871 census records Thomas, a 60 year old Butcher and Farmer of 6 acres, living at High Street, Scotter, with his wife Mary, and children Hunt (16) and Emma (12).[40]

Wife's Death and Burial
Thomas' wife Mary died at Scotter on 18 April 1879[41][42] and was buried at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 22 April 1879.[43][44]

1881 Census
The 3 April 1881 census records Thomas, a Widower. aged 70, occupation Farmer of 50 Acres employing 2 labourers and 1 boy, living at Bridge Street, Scotter, with his daughter Emma, who was the Housekeeper. Grandsons Walter and Thomas Vickers (sons of daughter Jane who lived next door) were both Farm Servants.[45]

Death
Thomas died at Scotter on 16 October 1884[46] and was buried at St Peter's church, Scotter, on 19 October 1884.[47][48]

Probate
Probate was granted at the Principal Registry on 27 February 1885 to Hunt Marris of Scotter Butcher the Son the sole Executor. Effects were £460 4s 8d.[49]

The parish register for the baptism of Hannah, born 1851, records her as Mary, not Hannah.
