Biography

Eliza was born on December 16, 1826,[1][2][3] according to the calculation done using the information on her headstone, as reported in The Wagner Family Early History. When she was 20 years old, Eliza married Thomas Jefferson Leonard (abt.1825-1882) on July 25, 1847, in Union County, Indiana.[4]

At age 23, Eliza was enumerated by name in the 1850 US Census (see below) while living with her parents and siblings in Center Township, Union County, Indiana.[5] A transcription can be found here: Marshall & Leonard Families - 1850 US Census Record.

She passed away on November 19, 1856 at age 29.[1][2][3]

Research Notes

  • It is presumed Eliza was born in Center Township, Union County, Indiana because that is where her parents were living in 1830, according to the 1830 US Census. In the 1850 US Census, she was reported as being born in Indiana.
  • It is presumed Eliza died in Center Township, Union County, Indiana because that is where she was buried and is where her family continued to live after her death, according to the 1860 US Census.
  • Were Eliza and Thomas Jefferson Leonard (abt.1825-1882) still married when she died? Four facts call this into question: 1) Her last name wasn't put on her headstone, 2) Eliza and Thomas weren't living in the same household in 1850,[5] 3) her father sued Thomas and two other family members in 1858,[6] and 4) Thomas had a later history of mutliple marriages, which could be an indication of him having challenges with marriage.
