MASCARENE, PAUL (born Jean-Paul) was born c1684 [1] in the province of Languedoc, France, probably at Castres. He was the son of Jean Mascarene and Margaret de Salavy. His family were French Huguenots, and left France after the edict of Nantes in 1685 when Paul was an infant. He was left to be raised by his grandmother and when he was 12 years old, was sent to be educated in Geneva, Switzerland. There is a record from 1706 showing he was residing in Languedoc. [2]
After his education, he went to England where he became a military officer and in 1711 was posted to Boston, Massachusetts. There he married Elizabeth (Eliza) Perry in 1714. [3] and they had 4 children.
He served as a military engineer and negotiator between 1710 and 1740. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia from 1740-1749. [4][5]
According to Wikipedia, the American actor James Spader is a direct descendant.
