Biography

Carroll was born in 1886. He is the son of William J. Mason and Rhoda Weatherford. ^[1]

1900 – Kentucky, Hancock County, Patesville, 8 Jun 1900 The 58th family in the census is the William J. Mason family consisting of William J. (39), wife Rhoda M. (38) and son Carroll (13), daughter Cora E. (11) and daughter Stella C. (9). William and Rhoda have been married for 14 years and have had three children, all of who are still living. William is a farmer and they rent the farm. William reports he and his parents were born in Kentucky while Rhoda reports she was born in Indiana but her parents were born in Kentucky. Mary E. Mason, his mother, is listed next in the census records. The David Alton Mason family is listed a few lines above them in the census as well.

1906 – Tennessee, Davison County, Nashville, 23 Jul 1906 US Army enlistment register shows a Lawrence C. Mason (21) from Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He is listed as a school teacher who has blue eyes, light brown hair and has fair complection. He is listed as 5’8” and was discharged in Gibbon, Alaska. 1909 – 4 Nov 1909 US Army enlistment register shows Lawrence C. Mason (24) has enilisted again. He is reported to be a soldier with blue eyes, dark hair and is listed as 5’7 ¾”. He was discharged in 1912 in Omaha, Nebraska. He reports he was born in Breckinridge County, Kentucky.

1910 – Wyoming, Laramie, Fort D.A. Russell, 19 May 1910 Sheet 7B lists Lawrence C. Mason (24), a single white male as a member of the Company B Signal Corps. He reports he is from Kentucky as is his father. He reports his mother is from Indiana, consistent with the reporting of the 1900 census. He is listed as a telegraph operator for the US Army.

1913- Kentucky, Jefferson County, Louisville, 23 Jan 1913 Lawrence C. Mason (27) has enlisted again. He reports he is from Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He is reported to have blue eyes, brown hair, a fair complection and is listed as 5’7 ¾”. He was transferred to the Army reserves on 22 Jan 1917.

1917 – New York City, 22 Jan 1917 Lawrence C. Mason is a passenger on the SS Colon traveling from Cristobal, Panama to New York City. The ship arrived in NYC on 22 Jan 1917. He reports his date of birth as 12 Jun 1886 in Nattingly, Kentucky. He was likely working on the Panama Canal project.

1920 – New York, New York, Manhattan Assembly Dist. 3, District 242, Jan 1920 Sheet 3A lists Lawrence C. Mason (33) and wife Katherine (28) living on 15th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. He reports he and his father are from Kentucky while is mother is from Indiana. She reports she was born in New York and her parents are from Germany. He works in the armory for the State Guard.

1925 – New York, Queens, AD 02, ED 52, 1 Jun 1925 The New York 1925 census shows Lawrence C. (39), wife Catherine F. (33) and daughter Ethel V. (7) living at 4816 Caroline Street. He reports to be working for the Armory.

1930 – New York, Queens, Queens District 127, 21 Apr 1930 Sheet 18B shows Lawrence C. Mason (43), wife Catherine F. (33) and daughter Ethel V. (8) living at 7726 66th Road in a home they own. The home is valued at $7,500 and they report to own a radio. The couple reports they have been married for 10 years. Lawrence now reports he and his parents were born in Kentucky. Catherine reports she was born in New York and her parents in Germany. Daughter Ethel was born in New York. Lawrence reports to be the president of an advertising company.

1933 – New York, Queens, 7726 66th Road The City Directory shows Lawrence C. Mason, and wife, Catherine F. living at this address. He is listed as President and Treasurer of the System Advertising Services.

1940 – New York, Queens, District 41-348, 3 Apr 1940 Sheet 1B shows Lawrence C. Mason (52) and wife Catherine F. (48) living at 7726 66th Road. Also living with them is their cousin, Edward J. Beyer (50), a widower. Lawrence reports he completed 4 years of college, Catherine an 8th grade education and Edward completed 4 years of college. They all report they lived in the same house in 1935. Lawrence reports to be a clerk for the US Army Engineering. He earned $1,680 the previous year. Edward is a tool maker who earned $2,000 the previous year.
