Biography

I searched for his marriage with Bridget O'Neill in St. Michaels parish in Limerick city between 1825 and 1827 without success. I thought they might have been married in that parish since their daughter Mary was baptized there in 1827.

I ordered and received a copy of his death certificate number 46027 from New York city which states: William Masterson 70 years old, white, (no mention of his marital status or not), occupation plasterer, born Ireland, his parents also born Ireland, resident of NY city for 21 years (so immigrated around 1849), died at Ward number 16 at Alms House Blackwell's Island 19 in NY city. He died on October 27, 1869. The chief cause of death was phthisis which seems to mean tuberculosis. Burial October 28, 1869 at Calvary cemetery.

His parents were also born in Ireland.

He died at Blackwell's Island Alms house, New York. Death certificate number 46027. Here is an article about the place he died, also called the city hospital built in 1861: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Hospital_(Roosevelt_Island) I suppose one has to go to NY city to read the ledger books: http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/archives/collections_almshouse.shtm

His wife's name is Mary, probably Mary O'Neill, born Ireland, died New York city probably or else in Ireland or England before the immigration of her husband.

I wrote to Calvary cemetery in New York city and on the plot: Section 5, Range 7, Plot Z, Grave 3 there are 8 people buried and William Masterson was buried October 29, 1869 at the age of 70 (we suppose this is approx.) and was born in Ireland. So he was born probably circa 1799. But there is no mention of his wife in that cemetery plot. In the Italian Genealogy NY site, William's death certificate is number 46027.

Here is a William Henry Masterson listed on a polling list in London England in 1847, https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89FL-SSP6?i=19&cc=2228170

On the site Findmypast there is a William Masterson born 1804, son of Catherine Masterson, widow, born 1751 (would that be the mother or grandmother because big age difference?) and that William has brother Thomas Masterson born 1802 and sister Salley Masterson born 1801. http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=ire%2fcensus%2f1821-1831%2f1452. That William is a labourer. This is the 1821 census. So he is not married. Townland North Commons of Trim, parish = Trim, county = Meath, Ireland.

On Findmypast, there is a William Masterson born 1805, so 16 years old in this 1821 census, He is a plough boy in Ardgreagh (Carrotstown) townland in Kilcooly parish in county Meath, Ireland. He is living with the Sherlock family. Maybe his family is living elsewhere.

On Findmypast there is a William Masterson baptized between 1783 and 1804 in St. Paul's roman catholic church, Dublin, Ireland. Baptism number 2036. I'll have to check St.Paul's baptisms to find number 2036.

On Findmypast there is a William Masterson baptized roman catholic 1802-07-11 in Navan parish, diocese and county Meath, Ireland. Mother is Marrel King. Father is Andrew Masterson. http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=ire%2fprs%2fmicrofilm04181-05%2f0153&parentid=ire%2fprs%2fbap%2f5858923

According to this UK site in the 1841 census: https://www.ukcensusonline.com/search there was a William Masterson living outside of Warwickshire 56, dressmaker, born around 1785, another William Masterson, 30 living outside of Devon, another William Master, journeyman, 25 living in Hampshire county, another William Masterson 25 agricultural laborer living in Norfolk, another William Masterson 40 blacksmith living in Suffolk, another William Masterson 26 in Suffolk. A Mary Masterson, 4 living in Warwickshire. The William Masterson 40 blacksmith is the most likely candidate.

Maybe he went to the civil war. See Ancestry at library and also: https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers.htm?battleunitname=&sortfield=last_name&maxrows=20&statecode=&lastname=Reynolds&showall=0&firstname=&warsidecode=U&battleunitcode=&submitted=1&battleunitfunctioncode=&startrow=4301

Could this be the death of his son William, 0 years old ? Wife Mary, son William, father William, mother Mary ? The year is 1893 so probably not realistic. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FD1W-S8K

Could this be death of his daughter ? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2W67-GWL If it is his daughter she is not buried in the same plot.

1850 us census in district of columbia there are: William Masterson (63 born ireland, shoemaker), wife Mary (55 born ireland), daughter Eliza (30 born ireland): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-XCSC-3V8?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMX6M-FW1&action=view

1855 Census, We have William and wife Mary, 2 children but no Catherine who would have been around 12 at the time. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K67K-6MV I don't think this is the right family because there is no Joseph H. Masterson who would have been 11 at the time of the census. (We learn the existance of Joseph in the Calvary family plot).

1855 NY census taken on August 17th we have a William Masterson 50 plasterer born Ireland around 1805 and 6 years in this city, wife Mary (or Marg?) 28 (she must be a second wife of his) born Ireland around 1827 and 14 years in this city, Katherine Masterson 16, Mary Masterson 6, etc................. and a neighbour is a Patrick Reynolds 25 stonecutter born Ireland and 2 years in this city and wife Margaret 25 born Ireland and 2 years in this city, James Reynolds 3 and 2 years living in this city and born Ireland, Ann Reynolds 7 mo. born NY. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GB53-V49?mode=g&i=100&cc=1937366. Here the child Joseph Masterson 12 seems to fit the age of the Joseph who dies at 20 in 1864 but the Katherine and the Mary don't fit and the William (father) fits a little. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GB53-V49?i=100&cc=1937366&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AK672-9WL

In 1855 NY census there is a William Masterson 50 plasterer born in Ireland and living in this city since 20 years, his wife Mary Masterson 41 born in Ireland and living in this city since 19 years, daughter Louisa Masterson 6 born in NYC, daughter Elizabeth Masterson 10 months born in NYC. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-8B53-KHG?mode=g&i=74&cc=1937366

In 1860 census there is a family with head William Masterson 48, his wife Adelaide 45 and several children but not the 25 year old Mary I'm searching but still perhaps...https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GBS6-9QKJ?mode=g&i=244&cc=1473181

In 1860 census in dictrict of Columbia is William Masterson 70 shoemaker and Mary Masterson (daughter?) 35: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YBY-KJ1?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMCV9-91S&action=view

There is a will and testament of a William Henry Masterson on December 30r of 1868 in NY City. His wife is still alive and called Mary. His brothers are Peter and James. I don't see children mentioned. see Ancestry

In: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GB53-V49?mode=g&i=100&wc=M6GQ-529%3A237409701%2C237722301%3Fcc%3D1937366&cc=1937366 Here is a William Masterson born around 1805 in Ireland, who is 50 years old in 1855 census. He is a plasterer. He resides in NY city since 6 years and is not naturalized. So he would have immigrated to USA around 1849. His wife Mary (or is it Margaret?) is 28 years old also born in Ireland around 1827 and resides in NY city since 14 years and is not naturalized. This young wife is surely his second wife, his first wife is probably dead. William surely married her in New YOrk because he is in NY since 6 years and she is in NY since 14 years. Maybe she is Mary O'Neill ? He has a son William Masterson 18 born Ireland around 1837, not naturalized, daughter Katherine Masterson, 16, working as a domestic and born in Ireland around 1839, not naturalized, son Joseph Masterson 12, born in Ireland around 1843 and not naturalized, daughter Mary (or Margaret?) Masterson, 6, born in NY around 1849, daughter Eliza Masterson, 11 months, born in NY around 1854.

In regards to the previous paragraph, we have a Mary Elizabeth Masterson born around, died 1893-12-25, single, Manhattan, 38 years old, father William, mother Mary. She was living at 130 East 69th street.

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&englishSubcountryName=New%20York&query=%2Bgivenname%3Amary~%20%2Bsurname%3Amasterson~%20%2Bbirth_place%3AIreland~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1800-1820~%20%2Bspouse_givenname%3AWilliam~%20%2Bspouse_surname%3AMasterson~%20%2Brecord_country%3A%22United%20States%22%20%2Brecord_subcountry%3A%22United%20States%2CNew%20York%22

In the above site, we have a William Masterson (born Ireland) married to a Mary Masterson (married name, born Ireland) whose daughter Mary Elizabeth Masterson dies on 1893-12-25 in Manhattan, NY on 130 EAst 69th street, single, 38, housekeeper, born around 1855 in NY city.

The only plausible William Masterson I find in the site of NY city deaths in the following site is at 70 years old 1869-10-27 Manhattan, death certificate number 46027 So if it's him he would be born around 1799. And this is the name and date of the William Masterson in the family plot at Calvary cemetery. I'd have to find his death certificate 46027 to get more info.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FD1M-BM7 Here we have a William Masterson who dies at the Alm's House at Blackwells Island on 1869-10-27. It would be sad if it was him. It's got to be him with the date.

There is a William Masterson (50) and his wife Mary (50) who immigrate to NY city in 1846 with children: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-R996-Q1?i=674&cc=1849782 and the following page too. But no recognizable people.

There is a William Masterson, 50, bootmaker and his wife Mary who immigrate to the US from England in 1846 but the childrens' ages and names don't seem to correspond: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-R996-Q1?i=674&cc=1849782

In the 1841 England census on familysearch there are several William Mastersons but none that seem to include his older children Mary and William. Maybe he was still in Ireland at that time.
