George Llewellyn Matthews (Lewis), son of James John Matthews and Lydia Hicks was born in Channel, British Colony of Newfoundland, along with seven siblings. His parents brought the family to Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada when he was a toddler. One more brother, James, was born after they arrived in Canada.
In the 1901 census Lew (age 16), his parents Jamie & Susan and five of his siblings were listed together living in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton. Lew was listed neither as a worker or student at the time of this census but did start at the coal mine shortly after.[1]
In the 1911 census Lew (age 26), parents James & Lydia and 2 of his siblings were living in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Cape Breton.Lew was working as a coal miner.[2]
Lew (27) married Susan Warren (20) on 4 December 1912 in Sydney, Cape Breton.[3]
In the 1921 census Lew (age 34), was working as a cashier for a coal business. He was living with his wife and the first five of their sons at 75 Main St, Sydney Mines, Cape Breton.[4]
Two daughters were born after this census was taken.
Lew died (age 72) on 31 May 1958 in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton.[7] He was buried in Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Sydney Mines, Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, Canada.[8]
