Biography

Susannah Budden Warren was born to John Warren and Amelia Budden on the 9th of April, 1892 in Heart's Content, Trinity Bay in the British Colony of Newfoundland. ^[1] John was the lighthouse keeper in Heart's Content and the family lived in a small building attached to the lighthouse.

At the age of 18 Susannah (Susie) left Port aux Basques, Newfoundland on the Bruce accompanied by Mrs J Warren. They landed in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, Sept 1910. ^[2]Although both stated that it was not their intention to remain in Canada permanently, Susie was to be employed as a domestic worker for her aunt Fanny Hopkins in Sydney Mines. Here she met her future husband, Lew Matthews.

Susan married George Llewellyn Matthews on Dec 4th, 1912 in Sydney on Cape Breton Island.^[3] They took up residence in nearby Sydney Mines where Lew was a coal miner at the Princess Colliery.

Their family grew quickly. By the 1921 Census their first five sons - Art, Ev, Les, John and Lew had arrived. ^[4] By 1931 they were joined by six more brothers - Sam, Ern, Hubert, Russ, Bob and Norm plus an infant boy. The all-male line was finally broken with the arrival of daughters Marion in 1933 and Mildred in 1936.

Four of their sons served in the second World War and all four returned home safely, much to Susan's relief; who could be found nightly by the radio listening to the news.

Tragically, their son Bob drowned while swimming with friends on June 26th, 1946. He was 16. ^[5] Family members recall the front room filled with lilies surrounding his coffin, as was the custom at that time.
