Notes

Mary Ann Mays was commonly referred to as "Pollyannie". She was a daughter of Littleberry Mays, Sr., and his wife Phebey Smith. On January 10, 1797, Mary was mentioned in the Will of her maternal grandfather, Captain Thomas Ballard Smith. Mary's mother, Phebey Smith, was a daughter of his. Mary was mentioned as one of Phebey's three daughters when Thomas Smith wrote his Will. October 10, 1850, Mary MOORE was recorded as the head of her household, and as a 70 year old female with no occupation who owned 0 in Real Estate and was born in Virginia. Living with her was her youngest child and son whose name appears to be written on the Census as "Harriet" but was actually HOSEA, i.e., James Hosea Moore. James wife Eliza was also living in this home as was their 1 year old son Abner Moore. In July 1852 Mary (Mays) Moore, widow of Abner Moore, filed for her 1/3 share of her maternal grandfather's 1797 bequest to her. By this we know that Mary's mother Phebe had died prior to this as the slaves that were bequeathed to her mother were to go to her three daughters after Phebe died.
