Biography

William McBeath pops up in Montgomery County, Virginia the first time December 1793 when he is engaged to Nancy McMullen on December 25, 1793. Interestingly enough, less than a month later he is engaged into Rachel McGee. In looking at the 1792 Census data for Montgomery County, I can see that the McGee's, McMullen's and McBeath's all live near each other as they are listed within a space of ten lines of each other on the Census.[1]. That said, his sisters show up earlier. In 1790, Margaret McBeath marries William Black in Botetourt County, Virginia. William Black goes on to found Blacksburg, VA.

I think that William McBeath and his 4 siblings may have been in charge, adopted or just simply raising them after the deaths of the parents. If this is true that explains the link with Robert McGee, who was one of the five McGees to migrate to Wayne County, Kentucky. On March 15, 1806, William McBeath purchases 300 acres of land from Robert McGee in Wayne County, Kentucky on the Meadow Creek.

QUESTION: Based upon the Dec 25, 1793 statement above, does the inclusion of Robert McGee possible indicate that Robert McGee had custody of the McBeath's. If that is the case, then what happened to the original parents?

From what I have read, the McGee family immigrated from Northern Ireland in Antrim, or Ulster. The McGee family, was Presbyterians. I see Robert McGee buying land in 1769 in Botetourt County, Virginia. The McGee family immigrated to America in 1750. The five brothers were: Robert McGee settled in Wayne County, Kentucky. He died in 1815. David McGee - Kentucky Pioneer that settled on Howards Creek in Clark County in 1775 and established McGee Station. He died in 1823. William McGee was the older brother of David McGee. He died in Clark County, Kentucky in 1822. James McGee settled in Mercer County and died in 1818. John McGee b. 1730 in Ireland. From 1760 to 1770 he lived in Botetourt County, Virginia on the Catawba Creek. He was married Mary McCoun in 1767. He fought in the Battle of Point Pleasent on 10 Oct 1774. John built a cabin on the Salt River near Harrodsburg. John died in Mercer County on Jan 1, 1810.

These five brothers were linked to the McAfee group too. In 1773, John McGee's 2 brother in laws James McCoun and Robert McAfee (wife was Anne McCoun) came to Kentucky from Botetourt County, Kentucky. On July 26th and 27th, they survey 1000 acres for John McGee on both sides of the Salt River. These lands were adjacent to Samuel McAfee and Samuel Adams. They were 4 miles NW of present day Harrodsburg, KY.

In 1775, they made a second trip to Kentucky to clear land and build a cabin. This time John McGee was with them.

In 1776, the McAfee group tried to move to Kentucky by water but were blocked by a drout and the commencement of the Cherokee War.

August 17, 1779, the McAfee family moved to Kentucky. They arrived on September 27 at Wilson's Station on the Salt River, which was about 21/2 miles from Harrodstown.

Oct 26, 1779 through 1780- John McGee presented himself before the Court of Commissioners and claimed the 1000 acre tract that the McAfee Company surveyed for him. The McGee's stayed in James McGees cabin as Indians were on the attack. James McGee's cabin was the biggest and most protected.

During the 1780's Indian attacks continued

In 1790, John McGee built a new home on the eastern edge of the Salt River.
